Do dog whistles work on cats?

A dog whistle is a kind of device used to train dogs. Dog trainers have proven that training and conditioning a dog becomes much easier with the use of dog whistles. Cats and dogs have different personalities. Cat owners are aware of the fact that cats are rather hard to train. Will dog whistles make cat training easier too? Would dog whistles work on cats? Dog whistles were named so because they are primarily used in dog training. However, it was proven that dog whistles also work on cats.

Dog whistle also called silent whistle is a device invented by Francis Galton. This scientist has found out that it is possible to change sound frequency by altering the shape of the whistle. The sound frequency produced by short whistles with thin bodies is much higher. Lower sounds are produced by whistles with a large circumference. Dog whistles are not toys for dogs. These devices are used to train dogs…and cats. Yes, cats! Cat owners are fully aware that it is rather difficult to train cats. Dogs are pack oriented…these animals would follow the leader of the pack. After domestication, dogs have considered the human family as their pack and the owner as the leader. Dogs are easy to train because inherently, they want to please the leader of the pack. Cats on the other hand are solitary and independent animals. These animals are not owned. Cats do the owning instead. Cats do not follow orders if they do not know what will happen to them if they do. This is the reason cats are considered to be opportunistic animals.

It is commonly believed that training cats is next to impossible. Cat owners and cat trainers that have used dog whistles in training cats believe otherwise. Apparently, dog whistles work on cats. Animals rely heavily on their senses for survival. Both dogs and cats rely on their scenting and hearing abilities to hunt prey and to avoid predators. The intensity of sound is measured in decibels and the frequency of sound is measured in hertz. Humans’ hearing range is 20Hz to 23 KHz; dogs’ is from 60 Hz to 45 KHz; cats’ is 45Hz to 64 KHz. This means that dogs’ and cats’ hearing abilities are more acute as compared to humans’. Very high or very low sounds that can no longer be heard by humans are still within the hearing range of dogs and cats. This is the reason why the sound of fireworks that is tolerable for humans would be very loud sounds that would frighten cats and dogs. This explains why dog whistles make training cats and dogs a whole lot easier.

The sound produced by dog whistles is above the hearing range of humans. The 16,000 to 22,000 Hz sound produced by a dog whistle will not be heard by humans but would be perfectly heard by dogs and cats. Cats can hear much better than dogs. It was therefore proven that dog whistles can be used to train cats. Cats can be trained to respond to dog whistles. The whistle can be used to get the cat’s attention even if it is at a distance. The sound produced by the whistle would be irritating to cats thus every time the pet starts to scratch furniture or gnaw the carpet, the owner simply needs to blow the whistle. This procedure has to be repeated every time the pet manifests an unwanted behavior. Because the sound of the whistle is unpleasant to the cat’s ears it will eventually refrain from manifesting its unwanted behavior. Oftentimes, cats feign indifference when called. Instead of calling the cat’s name, the owner can train the pet to come with the use of the dog whistle.
